The Macmull Guitar Collection of West Nashville is selling off the last of their instruments. The collection has been open to the public since May 2016, but after three years of hosting visitors eager to view and play the guitars, they are closing their shop.
According to one co-owner of the store, another entity is interested in purchasing all of the Macmull guitars.
The Macmull Guitar Collection has become one of Nashville’s historical landmarks, with over 75 different kinds of guitars on display used in songs recorded by artists worldwide.
Nashville is known for its country music roots, but it also has a history of soul music made famous by the R&B and blues artists of the 1940s and ’50s.
The Macmull Guitar Collection is a walk of history, with various classic guitars played by each of these musical legends. Some big names include Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell, and more.
Gary Macmull said he started collecting guitars when he was 12 years old, but his passion for music grew more when he became older.
“I’ve loved the guitars since I was a kid,” Macmull said. “As far as the history goes, that’s something that makes it extra special.”
Macmull said most of their visitors are musicians who play in bands or are interested in learning to play the guitar.
“A lot of people come because they have a child who plays the guitar, a husband or a wife who plays the guitar,” Macmull said. “Many people say it’s been something that brought their family together. It’s just been enjoyable.”
However, not everyone is as excited about the closing. According to some visitors, it’s a huge letdown, and they want to come before the store closes for good.
“I think it’s unfortunate that this is going away, but I’m sure that it’ll be back up somewhere else,” said Nashville resident Lisa Williams. “It’s just a bummer because you can’t really replace something like this.”
The Macmull Guitar Collection is located at 6000 Charlotte Pike in Nashville. The store is open from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and they are closed on Sundays unless there’s a private event scheduled. Admission to the collection is free, but donations will be accepted at the exit. An archive of guitars available for sale can be found on their website.
